Enisei-STM have been crowned European Rugby Continental Shield champions after repelling a late Heidelberger RK comeback to clinch a 24-20 triumph in Getxo on Saturday.

Tries from Vitaly Orlov, Uldis Saluite and Brendan Owen were enough to drive Enisei-STM to victory over Heidelberger RK, who scored two tries through Sebastian Ferreira and Hagen Schulte in the closing stages.

Heidelberger did strike first blood, though, via the boot of Raynor Parkinson as they scored a penalty, but their lead was short-lived as Enisei-STM flanker Orlov forced his way over the line after a number of phases from the Russian outfit.

The German side moved back within a point as Parkinson doubled his points tally from the kicking tee, but Yury Kushnarev slotted a penalty kick of his own moments later to give Enisei-STM a four-point lead at the interval.

Enisei-STM returned from the break to assert their dominance on proceedings and two tries in as many minutes from captain Saluite and wing Owen, both converted by Kushnarev made it seem like the game had slipped away from Heidelberger RK.

However, the Germans refused to relent and managed to rally a late comeback attempt as they scored two tries in quick succession.

First it was flanker Ferreira who was over in the right corner, before Schulte dotted down after a brilliant set-piece move, racing home straight off the back of a line-out, but Enisei-STM had just enough left in the tank to resist the final attacks from Heidelberger and lift the European silverware in Getxo.
